Who Should Win the Ballon d’Or This 2017?
The Ballon d’Or is a prestigious award given by France Football, having been awarded for just over 60 years. It is given to the male player who was perceived to have given the greatest performance in football over the previous year, as is determined by football journalists.
It was an award originally intended only for European players, but was opened in 1995 to players from European clubs. As of 2007, players from all over the world can attain the award.
Who Has Been Winning in the Previous Years?
Since 2008, there have only been two men to garner the prestigious award—Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. With Messi winning 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015, Ronaldo has likewise won the years that Messi hasn’t, including last year’s 2016 Ballon d’Or.
For showing immense excellence in the sport for 10 years (as they were runners-up in 2007), the Ballon d’Or has been rightfully bestowed upon Messi and Ronaldo 5 and 4 times, respectively. With their recent stellar performance, It is clear that this year will produce similar results. However, is it certain who will come out on top? Maybe.
In the Case of Messi
Messi has done plenty of things to make him worthy of his sixth Ballon d’Or. In the 2015-16 season, he had won the La Liga Title, scored 41 goals, and assisted 23 in club competitions. He also has the Copa club title. Overall, he is the third-top scorer in La Liga.
He has carried Argentina to the Final of Copa America. Provided that he continues this excellent performance, there’s a good chance of him heading up there. There is, however, the issue of the tax evasion case against Messi, which he and his father lost in July of 2016. This could deal a critical blow onto his chances.
Ronaldo looks to be the crowd favorite when thinking of the 2017 Ballon d’Or winner. He has won the Champions League and the European Championship; he finished La Liga in second place. After scoring 16 goals, he was the UEFA Champions League’s top scorer, as well as second in number of goals in La Liga, with 35. He has scored a total of 51 goals and assisted 23 in club competitions.
We feel as though Cristiano Ronaldo will come out on top and emerge with this year’s Ballon d’Or. While Messi has given a show-stopping performance each time he is out on the field, he falls short of Ronaldo’s finesse and skill, as well as not measuring up in terms of achievements, so we think that the award rightfully belongs to Ronaldo.
However, our opinion isn’t fact! As the Ballon d’Or is an award that is given annually, one can only speculate who will be winning this year. It looks as though Ronaldo might be able to tie with Messi’s 5 awards during this year’s awards show, but that will be entirely dependent on how well they will be able to perform over the course of the next few months. Their fantastic performances as players will guarantee them, if not the award, a place in the top three. But ultimately, who knows?
Depending on how events play out, an entirely different player might be bringing the prestigious award home. All that’s left to do now is to stay tuned for further developments and enjoy the game!
